The Junius Courtney Big Band steps out in full holiday regalia with their swingin’ rendition of Strayhorn’s Nutcracker. As Ellington’s musical partner, Strayhorn concocted a swirling jazz confection from Tchaikovsky’s ballet: hip holiday tunes from “Peanut Brittle Brigade” to the ”Volga Vouty.”

I am pleased to be offering my class, "There Is A Message In The Music". During this seven-week course, participants receive one song per week representing the history, culture and daily celebration and struggles of African American life. Songs by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Sly Stone and others are introduced to be sung both as a group and individually. Historical and biographical information about the composers is also presented for discussion. Musicians at all levels will enjoy the opportunity to sing music that stirs the soul and tells a story.

Music on the Main is an annual concert series that takes place on the 4th Wednesdays of July and August. Each concert features a variety of musical performances, arts and crafts activities for children, local entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations, and food. Music on the Main is a critical tool that Richmond Main Street uses to engage the community and build a strong arts and entertainment district.
